Our History

When a need arises, God provides! It was decided that the city of Springfield needed a church to provide a worship center for the people of Lutheran faith. In the spring of 1946 the Home Mission Board of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota began the process. There was a survey of the area, the people and their needs.

Springfield Lutheran Church began as a mission church in the spring of 1946. Many of the prospective members were people who had come during the Great Migration from the Mid West in the 1930's and 1940's due to the depression and drought.

Services were held in the Playmore Theater at 212 Main Street. The first service was held on July 7, 1946 with 40 people in attedance. This building was used rent free, which greatly helped this new congregation.

Ground breaking was held at the present site in August of 1948. The cornerstone was laid on November 21, 1948. The first service was held on December 19th, 1948.

Growth was happening and changes needed to be made. Sunday School had grown to such a size that it could no longer be accomodated in the present building. The new educational nit was built in 1956.

As the congregation continued to grow, so did the church building. The new sanctuary was completed in January 1968.

This is how the church stands now. Changes continue to happen to meet the needs of our congregation. The youth room has been remodeled. The sanctuary has seen some recent changes to accomodate our new projection system. We are also in the middle of forming a "Vision Committee" to look beyond the current needs into the future. What do we want the building to look like years from now? What an exciting time we have upon us..
